Kitty stabilised
22 June 2021 07:19Thanks for all the kitty well-wishes, folks! After more dashing back and forth to the vet and a scary few days where I couldn't get her to eat, puss has stabilised. Her repeat blood/urine tests came back showing signs of kidney damage from the weird urinary infection she mysteriously had after her dental op, but the damage looks to be up the milder end of the kidney-failure spectrum. Liver damage from the not-eating also looks very mild. The vet's optimistic that we can prevent more damage if we get her diet right. I need to lower her protein intake without going so low that the diet becomes unsuitable for an obligate carnivore. That means managing the nausea so she's willing to try less appealing foods and we're not quite there yet - an injection at the vet sorted her appetite right out in a couple of hours, but the take-home heartburn pills aren't helping as much.
Baby steps. She's much more herself, the catitude is back, and she's eating at least something every day. Stinky crappy supermarket-quality food seems to tempt her, maybe because she's never been allowed it on my watch before (they put sugar in it to make it caramelise and look appetising to humans, and Madam here arrived with fairly major dental problems when I adopted her). Priorities change, and her teeth are no longer top of the list. With cats, almost anything edible is better than them eating nothing. I can add Ipakitine to any wet food to spare her kidneys a bit. Fingers crossed that we're over the hump.
