Big Finish Productions has reached its 20th anniversary. Cor blimey. Their first release was a Bernice Summerfield title, the character not being owned by the Beeb but by her New Adventures author-creator. When they started making Doctor Who audios with the original characters, their BBC license was incredibly restrictive, their ensemble of skilled voice artists was an awful lot smaller than it is now, and you could still buy their stuff on magnetic cassette.
Now lookit ‘em - using the new logo before the TV show even gets a chance to; licensed to work with up-to-date BBC characters; releasing CD, digital download and trendy vinyl-revival formats; and cheerfully deciding they want to chuck four incarnations of the Master (from three different incarnations of Doctor Who) at River Song in one go. Because why not? Because they can.
And they’re still making a steady supply of Bernice Summerfield stories twenty years in - and plan to for at least another five years. Talk about a fannish dream come true.
